ROMANIAN MILITARIES IN THE THEATERS OF OPERATIONS
We would like to honor the Romanian militaries that participate in the accomplishment of the commitments Romania made and honor the memory of those who sacrificed themselves or were injured in Kosovo, Afghan and Iraqi theaters of operations during “Enduring Freedom”, “Antique Babylonia” and “Iraqi Freedom” missions (whether NATO, ONU, EU-led) as well as during the coalition-type missions:

„Enduring Freedom” Mission – Afghanistan
November 11, 2003 – 2nd Lieutenants (pm) Mihail-Anton Samuilă and Iosif-Silviu Fogoraşi were shot to death during an attack on the the APC they were patrolling in. The militaries were awarded „Virtutea Militară” Order in the Rank of Chevalier, with the war mark on it.
April 24, 2005 - 2nd Lieutenant (pm) Narcis Şonei deceased during a patrol mission after his APC he was in stepped on an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED), which caused the ammunition placed in the APC to explode. The military was awarded „Virtutea Militară” Order in the Rank of Chevalier, with the war mark on it.
June 20, 2006 - 2nd Lieutenant (pm) Ionel Gheorghiţă Drăguşanu lost his life on a patrol mission. The APC he was in stepped on an IED. He was decorated with „Steaua României” National Order in the Rank of Chevalier for the military, with the war mark on it.
September 6, 2007 - 2nd Lieutenant (pm) Aurel Marcu died while executing a patrol mission, the APC he was in stepping on an IED. He was awarded „Steaua României” National Order in the Rank of Chevalier for the military, with the war mark on it.
March 20, 2008-2nd Lieutenant (pm) Ionuţ Cosmin Sandu fell on duty while executing a patrolling mission; the HUMVEE he was in crossed over an improvised explosive devise. He was awarded “Steaua Romaniei” National Order in the rank of the chevalier, with the war sign.
June 13, 2008-2nd Lieutenant (pm) Claudiu Marius Covrig lost his life during a patrolling mission on A1 Highway (Qalat, Kabul). The APC he was in was attacked by the insurgents. He was awarded “Steaua Romaniei” National Order in the rank of the chevalier, with the war sign.
August 31, 2008-2nd Lieutenant (pm) Dragoş Traian Alexandrescu lost his life while patrolling on A1 Highway (Qalat, Kabul). The APC he was in was attacked by the insurgents. He was awarded “Steaua Romaniei” National Order in the rank of the chevalier, with the war sign.
„Iraqi Freedom” and „Antique Babylonia” Missions – Iraq
April 27, 2006 - 2nd Lieutenant (pm) Bogdan Valerian Hâncu died on duty while executing a patrol mission. Following the IED explosion, the vehicle he was in caught fire. He was awarded „Steaua României” National Order in the Rank of Chevalier for the military, with the war mark on it.
September 21, 2007 – 2nd Lieutenant (pm) Ioan Grosaru died while executing a patrol mission, the APC he was in stepping on an IED. He was awarded „Steaua României” National Order in the Rank of Chevalier for the military, with the war mark on it.
Other 44 militaries were wounded in the theaters of operations between 2000 and 2008.
Afghanistan
April 24, 2005 - Major Marius Dană was injured in a mission after his vehicle turned over.
April 24, 2005 - Sergeants Gabriel Hanganu and Adrian Dogaru suffered I and II degree skin-burns while executing a patrol mission in Kandahar. The APC they were in stepped on an IED, which caused the ammunition placed in the APC explode.
March, 31 2006 - Major Cătălin Ticulescu and Sergeant Major Florin Bolovan were injured after the APC they were in got damaged in a patrol mission at South-East of Kandahar Military Base.
June 20, 2006 – 2nd Lieutenant Dinu Răzvan Manoilă, Staff Sergeant Iosif-Adrian Luca-Micu, Sergeants Costinel Valerică Slăniceanu and Laurenţiu Şerban were injured on a patrol mission after an IED explosion.
June 19, 2006 - While Major Ion Stanciu was returning from the mess hall, a missile exploded at the entrance of the Romanian Camp. Following the explosion, his leg was injured.
June 23 2007 - Sergeant Gabriel Creţu suffered a head traumatism due to the explosion blast of a grenade launcher.
April 29 2007 –Sergeant 1st Class Marian Constantin was injured on a combat mission.
August 1 2007 - Sergeant 1st Class Ionel-Sorinel Berchetaru was injured following an indirect mortar attack performed by the insurgents.
September 6, 2007 - Lieutenant Nicolae Grigore, Sergeant 1st Class Mircea Daniel Solomon, Private 1st Class Alex-Octavian Zafiu and Sergeant 1st Class Marius Enescu were injured on an intervention mission executed in Zabul area.
March 12, 2008 - Staff Sergeant Sbughea Constantin Mihai, corporals Vasluianu Gheorghe Ionel and Hamza Gheorghe Doru were injured while executing a patrol mission on Qalat-Kandahar highway. The APC they were in crossed over an improvised explosive devise.
March 20, 2008-Corporal Atanasiu Silviu was injured at Zabul after the HUMVEE he was in crossed over an improvised explosive devise.
June 13, 2008-2nd Lieutenant Marius Vasile Apostol, Staff Sergeant Daniel Dumitru Drugan and Corporal Marius Barbu were injured while patrolling on A1 Highway (Qalat, Kabul).
August 31, 2008-Staff Sergeant Irinel Gheorghe Matei, Private 1st Class Bogdan Dumitru Butoi were injured while executing a patrolling mission on A1 Highway (Qalat, Kabul). The APC they were in crossed over an improvised explosive devise. They were awarded “Serviciul Credincios” National order IInd class, with the war sign.
January 3rd, 2009 – The volunteer private Nicolae Paraschiva was injured while executing a rapid intervention mission on A1 Highway (Qalat-Kabul). The Humvee (HMMWV), he was in crossed over an improvised explosive devise (IOD).
January 9th, 2009 - Lieutenant-colonel Augustin-Nicuşor Pegulescu was injured while he was executing a reconnaissance mission at 50 kilometers far from the Lagman Base. The American armored vehicle the military was in crossed over an improvised explosive device (IOD).
Irak
February 16, 2004 - Corporal Florin Vuţă was injured by a crane falling in Camp Al Hillal.
November 14, 2004 - Lieutenant-colonel Ion Voicu was slightly injured following a bomb attack on Camp Victory.
September 28, 2005 -. Due to the reduced visibility weather conditions, the APC the Staff Sergeant Marian Boboruţă was in turned over, the NCO being injured.
April 14, 2007 – Staff Sergeants Victor Cornel Giuseppi Petrilă and Alexandru Toma Petre, Corporal Iacob Valentin Muscă and Private 1st Class Dan Daniel Porumb were injured on a patrol mission.
September 11, 2007 - Lieutenant-colonel Dorin Petruţ and Major Iulian Daniliuc were injured, the first on the left leg shank and the latter at the shoulder bone following a missile attack on Camp Victory.
September 21, 2007 – Staff Sergeant Dănuţ Nicola, Sergeant 1st Class Adrian Ilie Barbu, Corporal Sorin Cătălin Popa, Private 1st Class Marius Traian Iovi and Sergeant 1st Class Gabriel Badea were injured on a patrol mission. The APC they were in was damaged and caught fire due to an IED explosion blast which caused the ammunition placed in the APC explode.
Bosnia-Herzegovina
March 26, 2000 – The volunteer privates Gheorghe Geczi Kiss and Ioan Marian Negoiţă were injured while escorting an official column with an Italian military police vehicle which was damaged in an ambush. .
